Schaeffler’s Challenge

Schaeffler needed to improve the efficiency and accuracy of their gearbox assembly process. The assembly was tricky because the parts—like planetary gears—moved freely and unpredictably. This made it hard to program robots to work effectively. To make things even more complicated, the weight, size, and shape of the parts changed, which slowed everything down. Schaeffler also wanted to be able to switch between different robot brands without a lot of hassle.

AICA developed the Smart Assembly module that allowed Schaeffler's robots to adapt their movements between different batches in just one hour!

This technology made it possible for robots to learn and adjust quickly, cutting down on downtime and boosting productivity. With AICA’s help, Schaeffler not only improved their assembly process but also met their goals for precision and speed.

Implementing in production

Since this collaboration, the two companies have implemented the solution on collaborative and industrial robots and evaluated and optimised the program. Schaeffler and AICA are currently working on additional projects intending to enhance complex processes for the automotive industry.


As part of its long-term strategy, AICA is developing new products to supply customers with opportunities to benefit from force feedback and solve some of the world's most pressing challenges. This includes EV battery recycling (disassembly), automatic screwing, and deburring.
